In his book “The 4 Pillars of Critical Thinking”, Patrik Meyer provides a comprehensive overview of the essential skills and techniques of critical thinking. The book is divided into four main sections, each of which focuses on a different pillar of critical thinking:
– Identifying assumptions: In this section, Meyer discusses the importance of identifying assumptions in arguments. He provides a number of techniques for doing this, including identifying the implicit premises of arguments, evaluating the evidence for assumptions, and identifying biases and prejudices that may lead to false assumptions.
– Evaluating arguments: In this section, Meyer discusses the importance of evaluating arguments for their validity and soundness. He provides a number of techniques for doing this, including identifying logical fallacies, assessing the evidence for premises, and considering the context of arguments.
– Making decisions: In this section, Meyer discusses the importance of making informed decisions. He provides a number of techniques for doing this, including identifying the different options available, considering the potential consequences of each option, and evaluating the evidence for each option.
– Solving problems: In this section, Meyer discusses the importance of solving problems effectively. He provides a number of techniques for doing this, including identifying the problem, brainstorming possible solutions, evaluating the potential solutions, and implementing the best solution.
In addition to these four pillars, Meyer also provides a chapter on logical fallacies. He discusses a number of common logical fallacies, and provides examples of how to identify and avoid them.
The book is well-written and easy to understand. Meyer provides clear and concise explanations of the concepts he discusses. He also provides a number of practical exercises to help readers apply the skills they learn.

“The 4 Pillars of Critical Thinking” is both interesting and timely. In the age of information, we are bombarded by content wherever we turn, making it challenging to navigate this vast ocean. Fortunately, this wonderful book acts like a lifebuoy and guide on this stormy journey. It is highly informative and gently guides us through understanding what critical thinking is and how to apply it to improve our lives, work, and relationships. I highly recommend it to those who wish to become better thinkers and illuminate a world often clouded by biases.

I like the way the author breaks down the steps of critical thinking into four pillars: foundation, process, improvement, and application. By developing these steps, one can gain deeper knowledge and make informed decisions with confidence. Critical thinking can be used not only in the workplace but also in health and wellness, education, personal finance, and in personal relationships. This is a skill that isn’t learned overnight but in daily practice. Regular practice enables you to make wiser decisions, effectively communicate your intentions, and establish more meaningful connections. I highly recommend this book.

Techniques are practical and making it easier to solve problems and make better decisions in everyday life. I also found the tips on spotting biases and logical fallacies very useful.

This is an EXTREMELY deep dive into all the tools and principles to support better critical thinking. The author’s approach of breaking down the critical thinking process into four distinct processes (which he calls pillars) makes this dense book much more approachable and applicable to daily life. By far the most significant sections for me were pillars 1 and 3 – models and improvement. The author’s heavy focus on identifying cognitive biases and focusing on root cause instead of proximate cause were very insightful. Those principles allow us to form a solid foundation for our follow-on process: get the foundation wrong, and the rest of the tools won’t help us. That’s why the improvement section was so impactful for me – it gives actionable tools and a framework to constantly re-examine and update our core assumptions and foundational models. The exercises he provides give a good set of tools to practice your critical thinking skills, and are easy to implement. Overall an excellent and thorough exploration of the subject.

I just finished The 4 Pillars of Critical Thinking and feel energized by what I’ve learned. The pillars include the Foundation, Process, Improvement and Application—and under each were theorems and methods that I had never heard before, and was glad to learn about. The book isn’t long, and yet its implications feel long-lasting and worth revisiting. Recommend!
