71 reviews for Mastering Essential Math Skills: 20 Minutes a Day to Success, Book 2: Middle Grades/High School

  1. The Way

This book is helping me getting freshed up in math but it contains a few typo’s. For example, on page 7 it says there are two #5 problems. There should be obviously one problem #5 and the other is problem #6. Nevertheless, it is a good math book. I just wished it gave more examples on how to actually DO some of the work.

  2. R. Chavali

Very good book with a variety of tips, exercises and a good stepping stone for middle/High schoolers.

  3. K. Webster

Last year in our homeschool, we switched to “Mastering Essential Math Skills: Middle Grade/High School, and it was the best switch we could have made. Both girls were to the point of dreading math, and after changing to this program, they now looked forward to math class and could make sense of it because of the step-by-step instructions. Great for 7th-8th grades. Our 2nd daughter actually moved from 5th grade to 7th grade because this program was available.

  4. Mary A. Oliver

I really loved this book when I first opened it. I am going to be a first year teacher and we are starting the year off with a review of fractions in my algebra 1 class. This book with help me a great deal because it has an entire section on fractions. Also it has other sections that are great for Geometry and etc. I am very happy that I bought this book.

  5. Cedar Button

This workbook has helped tremendously – from the start the scores went from 65% to 98% before the first week was out. My grandson says he wants to keep this with him throughout school, just to keep refreshing him. He now is selecting areas which he feels he needs review. He’s feeling good about himself for preparing for his first year of high school. Excellent book and I’m thrilled with results!

  6. C. Stillwell

I bought this book to brush up on basic math for a college assessment test I was going to take. I’ve noticed that some answers in the answer key were wrong. I needed my husband to double check these problems to make sure it wasn’t me. Otherwise, the book really helped me.

  7. Math Customer

This book does a good job of reinforcing the basics and builds to more challenging skills. I was hoping for a section on expressions/equations which it does not have. My daughter enjoyed the speed drills on each page and being timed to see how much she was improving.

  8. love’s to cook

I have not taken a college math course in over 10 years. The book was very helpful. It explained step by step what should be done in solving math problems. There were even practice problems to complete. The most disappointing part was that the book just gave the answers to the practice questions but did not give step by step explanations of the reason behind the answer.

  9. Marcel Veilleux

This is a great tool for those students (and adults!) that need a little refresher. I have already gotten a lot of use aout of it!

  10. Math Customer

I was using a different book with my grandson, who is in 8th grade.

  11. mmmrine96

I have not taken a math class in almost 18 years and this book helped me get back on track.

  12. Kristina Mcwhorter

wish there was more space in the book to do the work of the problems, but using scratch paper to solve them works fine for my son. excellent review and tutorial for any student struggling with math.

  13. Megan C.

This is a very helpful book for those that are looking to freshen up on you’re basic math skills. I covers just about everything in beginging math. I do reccomend this book to all needing to freshen up on you’re basic math skills. Thank You.

  14. Melissa

It is great for keeping up with your daily math skills but of course my son doesn’t think so.

Update: 11/23/13 after getting through most of the book, we have found that there are many incorrect answers. If your child is sure of their answer, but the book gives you a different answer, the parent should work the problem out to see who is correct. I also agree with another comment from someone else that the book should have more examples on how to do the problems. Overall I would rate this book as fair.

  15. Suzie Homemaker

This book provides great practice for basic math facts. This book is not a teaching book. I use this book to provide additional practice on basic math facts.

  16. Sarah

I was really doing well and enjoying my success until I got to the second section of the book and the videos are out of order and some are missing. I hope to resolve the issue with an email or a phone call.

I am back to update my review. Although I was unable to find some of the videos on the fraction section of book two, I found the written instructions to be enough to teach me through that section.

I intend to buy every book written by this author and would highly recommend this series.

  17. Helen D. Setterfield

I do a lot of tutoring for high school students, many of whom are not doing well in various math courses because, for a variety of reasons, they never mastered the basics. This book is absolutely excellent for that, going step by step. We don’t do the speed drills, just the regular problems. I have a student do half on a page (usually about four) so I can see where the hang-up is, if there is one at that level. It shows me immediately if there is a problem and we can deal with them one at a time as we go through the book. A very valuable tool for me and it does not ‘talk down’ to the student, which is pretty important for the older kids.

  18. Krishutch

This book is great! This is my 6th year homeschooling and I worked as a private school teacher before that. This math book is clear, concise and easy to use. I have spent large amounts of money on Math curriculum in the past. I will not make that mistake again. I am hooked!

  19. Tutor

Using this to homeschool my 7th grader who hates math. Perfect book for such a child. Online lessons, if needed, come free with the code in the book. It is all of the most important aspects of real math. Written in an uncluttered way. Not childish at all. Clear answers in the back of the book.

  20. Feenix Phyre

This book is a great way to keep these vital skills sharp over summer break or even for extra practice during the school year! My daughter is going into 8th grade and is enjoying that some of these items are a review from 7th grade and others are new concepts she is getting to learn ahead of the next school year!

  21. Julia S. Johnson

My recalcitrant learner has been transformed! I found a DVD from this series at our local library and it was so effective I bought two of the workbooks. The videos are clear, humorous, and easy to listen to. This is working beautifully for a homeschool math course for my now seventh grader, who resisted every other math approach I tried. I’m so grateful to find something that works at last!

  22. Tim Davis

I just received this book and believe it is going to work really well for our daughter. I love that it has videos to go along with the lessons. Because we homeschool, it’s nice for her to have another voice to listen to for some of her curriculum.

  23. Tricia

As a high school teacher, I have been amazed at how little basic math skills the average student arrives with in high school. For several years, I have thought about this issue and started developing my own program. I stumbled upon these books by Richard Fisher while looking for basic math questions. Not only did he have a fantastic approach to the math skills, but his units matched up almost perfectly to the skills I had selected as the most important math notions for succeeding in high school math. Thank-you for making my life easier. Now I have the perfect resource for students and also for my own children.

  24. Mamato7

I think this is an excellent review of basic math skills. I think it could be appropriate if you had a high schooler who was struggling with math or a student who just needs a quick refresher on topics like fractions. For many of us, math just doesn’t stay in our heads unless we continue to practice it. This is a painless way to review topics as needed. I think the layout is clear and it’s easy to open the book and get busy. However, It’s also my opinion that this would not make a good stand alone high school math curriculum, but I don’t think the author is trying to imply that. For me, this was just what I was looking for and I am very pleased!

  25. S. S. Printha

An excellent format for my 9th and 11th graders! Having both a workbook ( hands on) and an online video ( audio/visual) , this program has all the elements needed to meet the various learning strengths of my children. The videos bring the concepts to an understandable core and the book lessons reinforce the learning without hours of drill. All in an affordable package deal! Thank you!

We started traditional homeschool this year after years attending a public online school. My son HATED math! I decided to try this book for our first year homeschooling and he LOVES it! He says that this book actually makes math more entertaining and less confusing for him. For the first time, I’m not getting complaints and tears about doing math class! I’m very happy with this purchase and I would definitely buy it again. I’ll be purchasing other books by Mr. Fisher as we need them for our math class!

  27. Dawn D.

Exactly what I was looking for! A thorough overview of math basics! As a home-schooling mother of two, I have purchased my fair share of curriculum. This book was needed to start another successful year of home-schooling my teen son who would rather spend his time being creative than doing book work. He likes it! Thank you!!!

  28. Lucretia

Excellent, fast way to cover a variety of skills in a format that works for kids and adults, love the way the page is laid out with a short review of prior skills, notes on current topic and visually clear practice problems and speed drills. Really works with my adult students needing remediation.

  29. Marsha

I haven’t been to school in 20+ years, and I was a drop out on top of that but let me tell you, These books have given me the confidence I need in the area of math! So glad I bought this book!

  30. Walter M. Croxton

I am 82 years old. My doctor encourages me to keep active both physically and mentally. Since my sixth grade math classes were in 1943, I thought I’d see if I remembered anything. This book is GREAT! The math facts are presented very clearly, the math problems are clearly designed to reinforce the various facets of the assignment, and the review portions concentrate on the important basics. I can’t comment on how today’s children would benefit from this, but I would recommend it for any senior concerned about mental stagnation.

  31. William Lee Cross

This book has alot of material that i need to study and relearn and I find it useful it also has tutorial videos if I get stuck. It’s also a great price as well. I recommend anyone who needs to learn math skills this book. All public school and Adult Learning Center instructors should consider buying this book and using it in there class rooms

  32. Wendi J. Kempf

Exactly what I have been looking for, for my 8th grade homeschooled son. These daily reviews are perfect for retaining the basic skills that are needed for all levels of Math. The videos are a great added bonus, especially for homeschool use! So happy I found this!

  33. P. Wyatt

I haven’t had math in 30 years and needed a refresher before registering for a college math class (to finish my degree). I forgot lots more math than I remembered. This book has easy-to-follow examples. I stayed on target with 20+ minutes per day and finished it within a month.

  34. Cory J Andrews

I’m not great at math and this book has simple way of explaining the best best way for me to find correct answer without confusing me along the way. I feel so much brighter and more confident in my self.

  35. Educated consumer

This book was very useful for my son and I highly recommend it. I wish it had a DVD version because he focuses so much better when he can can hear the tutorials. I will be first in line to buy any DVD versions when they do come out.

  36. Math Customer

This is a great book for my son to review math skills as well as discovering any skills he did not master. My son prefers other subject over math, but was okay with the short exercise day to day. I would recommend this workbook to parents with children that dread math.-MCM

  37. Daniele

I absolutely love this book. I have been looking for a book like this to review math skills with a struggling tenth grade student. I love that the problems increase with difficulty, and offers word problems with each exercise. I would definitely buy this author again!

  38. Miller

My son has ADHD as well as a pretty serious math anxiety that he developed thanks to his teacher in the public school he attended berating and belittling him in front of the class when he couldn’t keep up. I have since started homeschooling him using this book and he is doing very well.

  39. Kimberly

Mr. Fisher hits the right tone to present math in a friendly and tactful manner. My children are learning new skills and reinforcing existing skills. We use this as a supplement to their public school education and are very happy with their progress. Their math confidence is soaring.

  40. Alyssa Jensen

We were struggling to find a starting point for my son when switching to homeschool. I got this because it was inexpensive and because of the videos. It has exceeded my expectations and my son is really enjoying it and grasping the concepts so quickly. He dreaded math before, now he feels confident that he can figure it out! I had gotten another curriculum, but this has been so easy to work with we are sticking with it!

  41. m maxwell

I have taught special Ed for many years. I am now a homeschool mother of three. This series gives students back the confidence they lack. It is clear concise and expansive. I have taught from many textbooks and will not use anything else!

  42. bil and paula lepp

Our 7th grade daughter, whom my wife homeschools, was struggling with math. She was getting frustrated and losing confidence. My wife got her this book and the change has been amazing. The videos helped concepts “click” with her, and each lesson offers enough problems to help her practice what she learned watching the videos without overwhelming her. If she blazes through a lesson, she can easily do two a day. If she needs a little more help or practice with a lesson, we simply create an additional worksheet for her. Our daughter no longer dreads math, and it is great to have “no more tears” math lessons. We do feel, however, that is is more closely aligned to middle grades than high school.

  43. Math Customer

This is one of the best books me and the family use in our home. Basic is always good. Sometimes we all need to back up to the essentials of math sometimes to update the brain what was forgotten. Great book!!

  44. AMYZON

We purchased this for our 7th grader to use as her math curriculum along with living math books. It provides daily drills, review questions and samples along with questions regarding the new skill. It is progressive learning at its best. I love the simplicity of the worksheets! We will continue to use this curriculum.

  45. Theresa Daly

I recently got two new high school ESL students, siblings, who have previously had limited formal schooling. This resource will help exponentially (ha!) to give them the remediation they need to tackle grade level math. The accompanying videos clearly demonstrate the problem solving steps so they can review as much as needed.

  46. Gayle

I wrote to the author to get his opinion on what books I should purchase to get ready for a math placement test. He wrote back very promptly with advice and words of encouragement. I’ll probably purchase a few more of his books when I finish this one!

  47. Jennifer Rodriguez

I have to say I love this book! I homeschool my kiddos and my two older kids hate math! And they hate textbooks so it’s been tough to find a math program that they like. BUT from the moment we get this book delivered, I haven’t had to fight them on doing math work. Every morning as soon as they’re done with breakfast, they grab their book and do the next leason. They are enjoying doing math now and homeschool is so much smoother. Thank you!!!!

  48. Arvin An

My son loves this book for his daily practice. This book reinforces all the essential math skills. It gives the confidence in the topics fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry abd integers. This book is the best math workbook my son have ever used.

  49. Jerandvic

So far I really am happy with this book. I was simply looking for a book that would help reinforce all the basic math concepts for my son. Although it seems simplistic at first (addition) It progressively moves forward covering just about all the basics that my son has had so far up to seventh grade. He was really lacking the confidence and mastery of math basics thus making it harder for him in math class when working on harder problems. I feel like this is just what I wanted. A no frills book that does what it says….”helping kids master essential math skills.” I will be ordering again in the future. It really does take only about 20 minutes too!

  50. HomeschoolMomma

Ignore all of the reviews that say you need to look up concepts, or there are no instructions!! Free, online videos are included for every lesson, you just need to understand how to use the book correctly! Make sure to read the first several pages of the workbook BEFORE you try to actually use it or teach it.

We homeschool and this is the best math book we have used. There are daily drills, followed by daily review and, finally, a few problems covering new material. The format is simple and follows a very clear progression. The videos cover each new concept and the author has you follow along and write down concepts and problems. Mr. Fisher speaks and instructs in an easy to understand, slow-paced way. You can pause and go back if you don’t understand. This book is not only appropriate for the middle grades, but also for anyone who needs to brush up on their basic skills (adults included). There are no cutesy or child-like illustrations in the book and the videos are taught as if he is speaking to an adult, not condescending at all. Perfect for my 7th grader! I wish I had found this series earlier. We will definitely be purchasing his math books for the next several years!

  51. J. Farmer

I purchased two math books of the same level. This one by far exceeded my expectations, and we never use the other one. These lessons were short and I have to keep my daughters attention, and easy for me to explain. A success!

  52. Peter Robustelli

My 10 year old son who I homeschool loves this math book. We have gone through so many curriculums because he loves math. This book he enjoys and feels that it makes math so much easier. He loves the videos. I recommend this book for everyone!! if you want to learn math quick and easy this is the way to go.

  53. Mindy

We’ve had ups and downs with math over the years but this program works great. It’s not “painful” to use and the tutorials are fun and really help the lessons stick. We plan to use other books in the series up through high school.

Additionally, Rick is very responsive and helpful to any questions we’ve had. Highly recommended!

  54. Dodi Bennatt

I am a 6th- 8th grade math teacher. I ordered this book for a student who struggled with math concepts and I am so glad I did! This back to the basics presentation and easy to follow format has been a huge help for her! Thank you Math Essentials!!!!

  55. Jimmy A.

    Very Helpful Resource!

This book provides students with enough practice problems to master every mathematical concept in this book. I highly encourage everyone who needs a little extra help in this subject to purchase this wonderful resource!

  56. Math Customer

Great practice work for middle school kids. It’s a convenient way to give your kids extra practice and help especially during the summer or long break. To bad they don’t make a part 2 with more different problems.

  57. Ms. Shops A Lot

Don’t hesitate to get this book if your child needs math help. It is a fantastic book. And the videos that come with it explain the problems perfectly. Best purchase.

  58. Monica Brown

I have used this book with two of my children through our home school. I LOVE it!!! I tried several programs in the past and this one has been great. So great, I am planning to use it with two more children.

  59. Math Customer

I love this book. I work for the school system in Pinellas County and I work with ESOL kids who really struggle. This book had been so useful.Thank you muchLuciana

  60. Math Customer

I liked that you could get your child to the level of math they are currently at and allow her to get a head start on new material at school.

  61. Candace Laguna

Our son, who is fighting a rare illness called ROHHAD, lives in and out of the hospitals. However, his education is an absolute must – because we are preparing him to LIVE! These are great lessons, accomplished in the brief moments where he has energy. Excellent resource!

  62. sris

This work book has everything for quick practice.level of practice problems is just right for a 6th grader .20 minutes everyday to improve efficiency and speed without electronic distractions is perfect.

  63. Rachael Carpenter

I homeschool my 6th grader. He is generally very good with math and picks it up very quickly, but can have issues with slowing down and doing things step by step and is very difficult regarding repetitive tasks (ALL subjects, not just math). I have tried many teaching options with him – Teaching Textbooks, Singapore Math, Spectrum workbooks and instruction by me, Acellus online, etc. Generally speaking, all of these methods have had 1 of 2 problems – either he can do the problems after the short instruction but forgets the steps very soon after because he didn’t really have ENOUGH practice OR he gets unbearably frustrated by the volume of work and repetition. This system is a perfect fit for him. He knows that he can be done with it in 20 minutes a day, and it reviews enough to keep things fresh in his mind, but not so much that it is tedious. The videos are good for when he needs instructions and doesn’t want me to provide it . Showing him the 2 sample problems myself is enough to determine that he know what to do. Having him correct any missed problems the next day is enough to get him to slow down and make sure he does things right. Oddly, the drill in the corner is super fun for him – which is odd because he really dug in and complained about all other drill sheets. Something about the random number, and the circle format instead of a line of problems really makes it seem much more manageable to him though.
In all honestly, the only concern I would have about this book is whether or not this is the right level for my son. This book covers Basic operations/arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, (angles, classification, perimeters, area) Integers, Charts & Graphs, & Word Problems. It is a thorough review of those concepts in a short time though. There are 121 total lessons (including reviews) in the book, so around a semester to complete, so I will certainly be purchasing book 3. An excellent value – truly the best ~$30 I have spent this year!

  64. Andy

I spent a lot of time looking for suplemental materials for my 5th grader. Math has always been a strong point for her and this book has been amazing. The speed drills are really fun for her and i love the notes and tips on how to use the book. The online toutorials are great and easy to follow. I would recomend this book for any parent trying to strengthen their childs math skills.

  65. kim white

It’s a good book to use to study for the past. If It has tests that help you see how your skills have developed and answers with explanations.

  66. Fernie

I have been home-schooling for 3 years now. The common core math that was initiated in our school 5 years back has completely planted a permanent “obstacle” in my boys’ brain. Before that they were a natural at math, with my youngest being a natural for word problems and analyzing. I have tried several different programs that I believed to be equally good (I love math), and this program is working. It’s short and sweet and they are starting to appreciate math again. Yes, it was slightly backing up, but sometimes you have to go backwards to move forward.

  67. Trey Paine

I ordered this book to re-learn some of the math I learned in high school eighteen years ago for a test I have to take for a job. Its very easy to learn from this book and I enjoy working the problems out on the pages. Thank you.

  68. Cassandra O’Neal

Great review of foundational skills and easy to follow explanations. If your student struggled with fractions and decimals, this is a good way to bring them up to speed. There’s some work with integers but no algebra at all.

  69. Lori Adams

This book goes at a good pace with a review each day and new materials presented. It is easy to understand and there is room to show their work. It covers quite a bit of material in a short amount of time.

  70. Shawn Mickle

I liked this book enough to order more titles in this series. The book is precise and the videos are an immense assett. Well worth the price! I recommend the NoNonSense Alebra, Math Essentials Book 1 and 2, Geometry, and Pre-Algebra books. They are worth it!

  71. Danielle Cooke

This book setup all the framework I needed to teach Math to my Title 1 students. I thought I couldn’t learn how to do math well. This book was exactly what I needed. To learn from the ground up!!
