As the title says, this is a workbook. So if you’re looking for conceptual understanding of calculus this is not for you. But, if it’s a good explanation of the steps used in doing calculus problems this book is definitely for you. Plenty of detailed problems worked out discussing techniques and methods used to solve them. Also lots of exercises with detailed solutions at the end too. Nice supplement for calculus course work!

This is a great book to add to anyone’s Calculus collection library.
Alert-
The writer assumes that you are proficient with Algebra and the formulas, postulates, and theorems that accompany, as does all other Calculus books. If you have not completed Algebra and a good understanding of Trigonometry then don’t buy this or any other Calculus book. Calculus is not a math toy to play with, without the basic foundation to start from.

Has everything one needs to understand calculus. the format is very well done. the best explained and easy to follow problems of all the calc books I have in my collection so far! I have many of them. you won’t regret getting this one. don’t waste your money and time trying to figure out what the others are trying to say. get this one and you won’t need any other calc book.

Great practice for calc

The calculus problems are pretty standard. However, the worked-out solutions are EXCELLENT; each step is clearly explained. Alternate answers are show, with step-by-step simplifications.
Michael Naegele –
Good explanations, nice practice
the_dude_abides –
Bought this to reinforce what I’m learning in class and like other reviewers said, the problems are worked out nicely and show a lot of the intermediary steps. I gave it a four because it only goes about two thirds the breadth of a calc 1 class and maybe one tenth the depth. The worked examples are are great, just very basic. It would be nice to see more depth at least, because someone is likely using this type of book to look at the more complex problems from a different perspective.

I like the explanations for solving certain problems. I find it really useful to have the book for practice to stay sharp

My favorite part of this workbook is that they walk you through every single step of the problems which keeps you from falling behind or getting lost in the sea of numbers and variables. There’s no wondering “why this goes here or where did that number come from” the author shows you everything in a simple, easily comprehensible manner. This book was well written and a great learning tool. Worth every cent.

I found the calculus review book good as a review. The exercises with solutions at the end of each chapter were helpful with somewhat detailed explanations. The mathematic properties such as trigonometric properties in the chapters were also helpful. I personally needed to do some of the exercises over again after I saw the solutions and explanations in order to see if I got the problem right the second time, principally because I want to understand the concepts thoroughly. Although, I don’t the believe the purpose of the book is to present the theories behind the calculus concepts presented, I went to other sources for the theories.

Excellent high school handbook. No messing around with nonessentials. Necessary

This book is good practice for intro level calculus.

TL:DR – Pros: Good for introductory students, and self-study review. Keypoints per section, and execute. Mistakes? Here’s EXACTLY why!
Cons: No laborious exposition on history/theory/definitions needed for later courses, BUT reminds you of algebraic/geometric ‘theory’ to show you why your problems are erroneous.
Review:
This is a great primer for someone that’s starting Calculus or has already done classes and completely forgotten everything.
It gives provides about a half-page of notes and keypoints, as if you just got done with the lecture.
I remember in college getting so frustrated getting erroneous answers even using Stewerts Solution manual, chegg, wolfram alpha, AND the internet, and I would still be left clueless, distraught, stressed, and agrevating having to spend so much time to understand what I was doing wrong.
This small booklet has got you covered!
The book’s notes and solution lets you know exactly what they’re doing, even the ‘trivial’ algebra/trigonometry, which was the bane of me, and often provides the most enlightening.
This book always lets you know “hey remember that weird obscure algebraic principle your teacher told you 4 years ago and spent 45 seconds covering in-class”. Well here’s why you use it, and how it relates to being operated under derivatives and integrals.
Which I think is actually super useful for Mathematical Proofs courses later on, as people tend to have forgotten all the juicy bits and pieces of algebra and trig which this small booklet reminds you of.
The book gives you the ‘lecture notes’ as if you just got out of class and says “GO!”.
The solutions give you such clear guidance for every step, and gives you the “why” did you just do that step “how did you do that” – ‘this algebraic property/identity’
The problems are also unique to give you new ideas to think about, as opposed to the 50 same original problems that you get tired and tedious of and 5 random extremely tough problems that you have nothing to connect them to.
This book doesn’t go over the theories and proofs, and history, etc, blah blah blah, that textbooks use to fill up the pages and bore the student to death to even attempt to read, let alone do the problems.
Gives you the ‘lecture notes’ and says “GO!”.
This book gives you unique problems, that give you progressively harder ideas to work with. Definitely not some of those crazy problems in textbooks, but it gives you the experience to tackle those head on.
This book starts slightly ahead of College level Material at derivatives curriculum starts at limits. So I’m surprised someone said it’s only useful for highschool. The book picks up roughly where my Pre-calc Honors class ended in Highschool.
This gave me an excellent crash course and refresher in Calc to begin Real Analysis/Advanced Calculus! If you’re a beginner calc student or advanced self-study looking for a review, this is your golden ticket! An absolute steal for $10.
Skip your lunch buy this book!

I’m wondering if Chapter 2, fourth example (x^4 + 3x^2 -6) / (x^2 + 1) has the incorrect solution for g^2? I have the workbook from 2018 and I plugged this in on some websites and the websites are getting the same answer I am, which is different than the workbook.

This was a great resource that I used to review the calculus I learned in college. I need a reminder and I loved that it did an explanation and then had practice problems with full solutions – not just the answers but explanations of the steps
Tim McGovern –
In pursuit of my interests in higher maths I found my computational skills in the basics, like what is covered in Dr. McMullen’s book, needed some polishing. It turns out I need a good deal of burnishing. Therefore this book, and It is my opinion that the book is a good place to start. I used the examples as a test of my beginning skills and, when needed, found the explanations helpful although could not be recommended if encountering the subject for the first time. Definitely go else where for a theoretical perspective. I found the whole approach succinct and to the point and the cost a good value for the price. A lot of repetition in the explanations and a bit of a grind with some of the finer points but I found it easy enough to skip over a lot of the discussion and find where my understanding was lacking. It felt good to see some of the old tricks from my years as an undergrad and look forward to reviewing the partial fractions approach, some other coordinate systems and infinite series in the next book; I will definitely get the follow up volume for the same low price and keep the momentum going.

I wish I had this book back in college. I learn by example, and this book has plenty of well document examples and solutions. I highly recommend!
I don’t think I found one mistake. Well done.
Randolph Eck –
I found this to be a great book for brushing up on your calculus skillset. Every chapter begins with an introduction to the material, followed by some sample problems with solutions to refresh your memory on how to do the problems. Following this are a bunch of practice problems. At the end of each chapter are fully worked out solutions to the practice problems.
The first part deals with derivatives: polynomials, chain rule, product rule, quotient rule, trig functions, exponentials, logarithms, and second derivatives, ending with limits and L’Hopital’s Rule. In the second part, we get integrals: polynomials, definite integrals, trig functions, integration by substitution, trigonometric substitution, integration by parts, and finally, multiple integrals.
I found the problems to be just right for someone reviewing the material. The solutions are very through and complete and immensely helpful. Keep in mind this is a book reviewing the fundamentals of calculus. You need to have had this stuff before. If you want an initial introduction to calculus, there are other books that you should seek out.

ANDREW H NICHOLS –
The McMullen calculus workbook provides a good review of basic calculus — an excellent primer for differential calculus. Coverage includes a variety of derivatives, limits, integrals (definite and indefinite, exponentials, logs, trig functions, etc.), integration by parts, and multiple integrals. Full solutions are provided (with step-by-step coverage). Instructions/explanations and sample problems for you to solve run through page 84. Solutions are provided on pages 85-141. It’s not too much — it’s just the right length. Completing the problems in the book by hand provided me with a good opportunity to learn the functionality of a new Texas Instruments TI-nspire CX II CAS calculator, which can solve differential equations and derivatives symbolically or numerically. It was useful to check my work, even though the book provides full solutions. Note: only the “CAS” version of this TI calculator has this functionality.
Mark Nettles –
A good basic review.
Algebra Beagle –
I took calculus in the past and wanted something to bring my mind back to it. This was a perfect product. Not as many proofs as there are practical problems, with step by step solutions with alternatives. If you want something that goes in depth proving the processes, you might want another book with this one. This one helps in the actual grunt work of solving problems. Heavy on trigonometric functions, exponents, and natural logs which others are missing.
julien van der zypen –
Top. most practical workbook
Doug Houseman –
The book offers easy to understand walk throughts of many calculus problems, providing an alternate method to what most professors do today in school.
Joel –
This was a great book that really breaks every everything down step by step. 5/5.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my Friend Kennedy in 2020. He enjoyed it so I’m gonna give it 4 stars.

It’s been a long time since I’ve touched college calculus. This book really good for revision. It has steps for each problem to understand and do the exercises. Good thing they have answers to check after you complete the exercises to compare your answers with their answers.

excellent book on subject

Well done professor, I wish I know this book when I took calculus. Step by step, good explanation, solution for every example.
Jeffrey Lynn Torres –
Overall, I liked the Calculus workbook.
I used the Calculus workbook as a personal refresher course.
• How much did you learn from reading and using this workbook?
a) The format and design of the entire workbook makes it interesting, clear and makes the “Calculus” easy-to-understand.
b) I learned a lot about Calculus. ‘Most’ students of mathematics (in particular, Calculus) think that math is boring and “cut-and-dried.” Also, they think the teachers or professors who teach it are boring and “cut-and-dried.” As far as mathematics’ teachers or professors are concerned, I’ve experienced the “Good, Bad and Ugly.”
c) As I alluded to before, I like the structure of the workbook: the author knows how to make Calculus interesting, fascinating and easy-to-understand.
d) As an example in differentiation: Turn to page 39: Chapter 8, “LIMITS AND L’HOSPITAL’S RULE” — the spacing and limits are done quite well. All the information the author presents is clear and concise. All of the Examples are spaced out well. The author does not ‘cram’ any of the information he presents.
e) For example, page 41, Chapter 8, Exercises — Part A: View answer to Exercise #8 on page 111 of the Calculus workbook. Also, view the Notes: in the middle of page 111.
f) As an example in integration: Turn to page 130, Chapter 14, Part B, #3 (we will apply trigonometric substitution), review the Notes: at the bottom of page 130.
• Were you able to understand the solutions? Yes, the solutions employed step-by-step analysis of the problem.
• Was it helpful to follow the examples while solving the problem? This is quite helpful. It teaches the student not to make careless mistakes.
• Would you recommend the book to others? Yes! If so, why? The overall design of the book is quite good. The Exercises get more difficult as the student progresses through each one.
In addition, the author has a list of all the formulas used in his Calculus workbook on the back cover.
Finally, the author is a prolific writer of mathematics, astronomy and physics workbooks.

Compact review of calculus covering the subject with the proven learning method of get the “Theory” then do multiple exercises.
Recommended, for those of us in need of a review.
Pablo –
Dr. Mullen truly does a step by step breakdown of the craft, with a good number of problems, also explained in thorough detail. The explanations are meticulous and well expanded, and the problems solved go slowly from the easy to the complex, in a proper buildup. A perfect buy for those learning this part of mathematics.

I purchased this book to help refresh some Calculus I concepts while I took Calculus II and it was essential! I refer to this book often during class and homework and I will keep it as I navigate through Calculus III and beyond

Outstanding book! Definitely a must have for quick review of calculus techniques. Wish I could have had this book when studying calculus in college, instead of trying to find what I needed in huge textbooks with cryptic descriptions that left we wondering what they were talking about. Thank goodness we had a teacher to help us, somewhat. Excellent author!

I’ve been using this book to review calc 2 derivatives to prep for a multivariate calc course next semester. The chapter explanations and answer keys are very clear and helpful.
I’m not sure how well this book would work for someone with no exposure to derivates, but it works very well for my purposes.
Bradford T. Taylor –
As a math tutor I’m always looking for examples to relate to my students. This book provides several practice problems and solutions are also given. The triple integral section could use a little more depth. I was hoping it would have more on changing the integration limits for changing the order of integration.
John batchler –
Great review book for cal 1 and two but it covers cal three if not already fid cal 3 then d o cal 3 before that part of the book
ddd –
Clearly, a lot of work went into this book. Very impressed with the full length solutions and have found no errors yet (other than my own!).
Great as a refresher or for someone learning calculus from more traditional sources (school, textbooks, etc) who requires some practice problems with thoroughly well-explained solutions. Each chapter has a brief out line of the topic covered (not at a conceptual level but at a more straightforward process level) but the main part is the question section. Covers derivatives, limits, integrals.
The back cover has tables of standard derivatives and integrals as well as the common trig identities.
Well priced and definitely worth 10 bucks.
I will definitely buy other books from this author as the quality shines out.

Theresa Van Der Vlugt –
This book is superb. I took calculus a million years ago in college, and have been struggling to be able to offer help to my own college kid with their problem sets, when they ask. No more! This book is concise, has GREAT examples that were clearly chosen with great care to cover the major types of problems (as you would find in a problem set) and gives clear, full, stepwise solutions to each. It takes a lot less time than watching youtube math videos, and is so personally satisfying! The short explanation sections throughout are clear and on-point. Anyone who needs a calculus tune-up should consider this book.
Honest Brief reviews –
It has all the formulas I’ve always struggled to memorize

very good
Jonathan G. –
I’m a few chapters away from the end and can already say without doubt that this book is a lifesaver. I’m currently doing a course in quantitative finance and found myself falling behind on calculus really quickly. Upon reflection I admitted to myself that I didn’t even know the basics. Well, after ploughing through every exercise and example as far as the chapter on definite integrals, I no longer have anxiety looking at introductory-level calculus problems. The rules are clearly explained, and each exercise has a detailed answer which leaves no doubts as to how it was achieved. Ok, back to completing the last few chapters!
