DESCRIPTION: This combination of physics study guide and workbook focuses on essential problem-solving skills and strategies:
- Fully solved examples with explanations show you step-by-step how to solve standard university physics problems.
- Handy charts tabulate the symbols, what they mean, and their SI units.
- Problem-solving strategies are broken down into steps and illustrated with examples.
- Answers, hints, intermediate answers, and explanations are provided for every practice exercise.
- Terms and concepts which are essential to solving physics problems are defined and explained.
VOLUME: This volume covers motion, including uniform acceleration, calculus-based motion, vector addition, projectile motion, Newton’s laws, center of mass integrals, conservation of energy, collisions, the scalar and vector product, rotation, moment of inertia integrals, satellites, and more. (Vol. 2 covers electricity and magnetism, while Vol. 3 covers waves, fluids, heat, sound, and light. Vol.’s 2-3 will be released in the spring of 2017.)
AUTHOR: The author, Dr. Chris McMullen, has over 20 years of experience teaching university physics in California, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana (and has also taught physics to gifted high school students). Dr. McMullen currently teaches physics at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He has also published a half-dozen papers on the collider phenomenology of superstring-inspired large extra dimensions. Chris McMullen earned his Ph.D. in particle physics from Oklahoma State University (and his M.S. in physics from California State University, Northridge).
Dr. McMullen is well-known for:
- engaging physics students in challenging ideas through creativity
- breaking difficult problems down into manageable steps
- providing clear and convincing explanations to subtle issues
- his mastery of physics and strong background in mathematics
- helping students become more fluent in practical math skills
MATH REVIEW: Separate chapters cover essential calculus skills (like derivatives and relevant integration techniques) as well as essential algebra, geometry, and trigonometry skills.
SOLUTIONS: The back of the book includes a detailed section of hints, intermediate answers, final answers, and explanations to help you solve each problem one step at a time. It’s like having a physics tutor in the back of the book. (However, if you would prefer complete solutions, search for ISBN 194169117X.)
USES: This study guide workbook can be used to:
- learn how to solve fundamental problems in physics with calculus
- find fully-solved examples of standard physics problems
- develop fluency in physics via practice exercises that include answers, hints, and explanations
- quickly find the most essential physics terms, concepts, and formulas
- prepare for the AP physics exam
- review for standardized exams, such as AP Physics or the fundamentals of the GRE.
CALCULATOR: Every problem in this book can be solved without the aid of a calculator. This is handy for students who will take a standardized exam like the GRE Physics, which doesn’t allow a calculator. (It’s also a handy skill to be able to estimate an answer without relying on a calculator.)

This is a new “math of physics” study guide series by an outstanding teacher.

to translate physics measures into math for physics, a must have ,many more examples than I’ve run across before, to give a real use for math learned,to make the math actually mean something!!

eBook on basic physics with Calculus is very useful. Worked examples was what I was looking for and this book delivered.

As someone who has found both learning physics and calculus very challenging, I am finding all of the books by Chris McMullen to be very helpful. While these are not a replacement for good text books on these subjects, they are a tremendous supplement. I am also enjoying comparing the sections in the physics books for solving problems for uniform motion vs. the same type of problem in “motion with calculus” to be a wonderful place to practice my elementary skills in calculus with real problems. This not only helps to cement my knowledge of physics, but also to help me better think about how I can apply calculus to these applications. These books, including the Physics Study Guide Workbook by Chris McMullen help a slow learner like myself to learn / review / and appreciate something that I struggled to just pass as courses in college. If I were a teacher of these courses in most colleges or in high school as AP courses, I would insist that students obtain Chris’s books for these physics and pre-calculus subjects as necessary supplements to what they would be attempting to learn in school. I also believe that there are many students like myself for whom these courses are very difficult, and I wonder how many ordinary have altered their majors to avoid these courses just because they believed them to be too difficult pass. Doing that is a real shame. What Chris’s books like Physics Study Guide Workbook does is to make these subjects more accessible to ordinary students. What I have said here, also applies to Chris’s books for calculus, and all of the pre-calculus subjects he covers as well. I wish I had these books available to me when I was in college!

Purchased this book for extra practice for my physics class and although I can come up with the correct answers, my professor teaches in a specific manner and if I do not show my work in HIS manner, regardless of having the correct answer, my answers are still marked wrong. The book did help clarify some concepts that were unclear and it does give me good examples to use for the topics we are covering.

The book has a very good setup starting with the review of basic mathematical concepts required for physics and then moves into more in depth chapters about the Laws of motion. Can’t beat the price for this so valuable book. Would definitely recommend.

If there are any clearer, better presented physics reviews out there, I have not seen them.

This book is so helpful and easy to understand. In addition to the physics, the book also explains the mathematical background you need. I would give the book more than 5 stars if I could!

Needed for HS Physics, not used good for reference since no books in classes these days.

Great supplementary material for physics! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for extra supplementary material.

I already took AP physics 1 and 2, but not C. This book explained things really well and helped me further understand physics and calculus (I had no understanding of calculus previous to this).

I love this workbook. I bought it for my intro Physics class, and the explanations are so easy to follow to complete the exercises and it even improved my Algebra and Calculus skills, especially with derivatives, integrals and application word problems using calculus. I’m going to check if the authors have a series for Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science and Engineering too!
Gregory Younce –
The book is a basic introduction to calculus based physics.

Has a good overview of a college level course

This workbook is perfect if you’re struggling to grasp the wording or teaching of a regular textbook. It clearly lays out everything you need to know and goes into amazing detail. Every problem has the answer, not just the odd numbers, and on top of that they have all the steps included in those answer. I’d highly suggest this workbook, it has everything you need for physics and it’s a great price.

There is no way to really learn Physics without coming to grips with the math and the only way to come to grips with the math is to do problems. I was having some trouble understanding some of the concepts and problems in my 1500 page Physics book so my advisor recommended this resource. It’s phenomenal! It gives short and concise descriptions of the concepts, walks through several example problems by showing all steps, and then gives you several problems to do yourself. If you get stuck, the step-by-step solutions to your problems are in the back of the book. If you really want to understand the math problems in your calculus-based Physics course then this resource (and the other two volumes) is for you!

For review and problem solving, not much on theory, but that’s not it’s purpose. I also own the author’s study guides for Diff EQ and Multivariate Calculus. The problems are worked out in great detail but can be uneven in level of difficulty, a real mixed bag. I purchased all of them to jump start my memory of courses taken many years ago and they are serving that purpose well.
Jorge –
Clear, easy to understand, has solutions, not TEDIOUS like other physics books.
Donncha –
I was planning to start tutoring and I needed a refresher. Also I need a study plan. This book was perfect.
ROF –
Very well done. Shows how to do things from the start. Lays down the foundations and builds from that. Excellent examples and problems that explain everything clearly. Its great to be able to understand and learn. Highly recommended.
