Book 1 of 3: Learn Physics with Calculus Step-by-Step
LEVEL: This book covers the electricity and magnetism topics from physics with calculus at the university level. (If instead you’re looking for a trig-based physics book, search for ISBN 1941691102.) Note that the calculus-based edition includes all of material from the trig-based book, plus ample coverage of the calculus-based material.
DESCRIPTION: This combination of physics study guide and workbook focuses on essential problem-solving skills and strategies:
- Fully solved examples with explanations show you step-by-step how to solve standard university physics problems.
- Handy charts tabulate the symbols, what they mean, and their SI units.
- Problem-solving strategies are broken down into steps and illustrated with examples.
- Answers, hints, intermediate answers, and explanations are provided for every practice exercise.
- Terms and concepts which are essential to solving physics problems are defined and explained.
VOLUME: This volume covers electricity and magnetism, including electric fields, Gauss’s law, circuits, Kirchhoff’s rules, magnetic fields, right-hand rules, the law of Biot-Savart, Ampere’s law, Lenz’s law, Faraday’s law, AC circuits, an introduction to Maxwell’s equations, and more.
AUTHOR: The author, Dr. Chris McMullen, has over 20 years of experience teaching university physics in California, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana (and has also taught physics to gifted high school students). Dr. McMullen currently teaches physics at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He has also published a half-dozen papers on the collider phenomenology of superstring-inspired large extra dimensions. Chris McMullen earned his Ph.D. in particle physics from Oklahoma State University (and his M.S. in physics from California State University, Northridge).
Dr. McMullen is well-known for:
- engaging physics students in challenging ideas through creativity
- breaking difficult problems down into manageable steps
- providing clear and convincing explanations to subtle issues
- his mastery of physics and strong background in mathematics
- helping students become more fluent in practical math skills
MATH REVIEW: A separate chapter covers essential calculus skills (including valuable integration techniques).
SOLUTIONS: The back of the book includes a detailed section of hints, intermediate answers, final answers, and explanations to help you solve each problem one step at a time. It’s like having a physics tutor in the back of the book. (However, if you would prefer complete solutions, search for ISBN 1941691137.)
USES: This study guide workbook can be used to:
- learn how to solve fundamental problems in physics with calculus
- find fully-solved examples of standard physics problems
- develop fluency in physics via practice exercises that include answers, hints, and explanations
- quickly find the most essential physics terms, concepts, and formulas
- prepare for the AP physics exam
- review for standardized exams, such as AP Physics or the fundamentals of the GRE.
CALCULATOR: Every problem in this book can be solved without the aid of a calculator. This is handy for students who will take a standardized exam like the GRE Physics, which doesn’t allow a calculator. (It’s also a handy skill to be able to estimate an answer without relying on a calculator.)

well done

Very good review of the subject
David Leonardi –
Very well organized and every step is explained in the examples. Each chapter presents all relevant formulas and then lists the meanings of each variable or constant symbol. The problems start out easy and lead up to the calculus problems. I have over 14 books pertaining to physics and this was one of the most helpful.

It help me understand the concept more clearly than the professor. It also saved my life. The only difference is the notation.

I have enjoyed all 3 of the volumes in “Essential Calculus Based Physics” so far, and for simple reasons. These texts truly do live up to their titles by introducing very *essential* ideas in physics. They bring all of the important ideas together, lay down the fundamental conceptual background information regarding the topic, and provide many examples to get you doing the work yourself. The concepts can be very clear for those who are accustomed to the “do it yourself” style books, but remember that this is a study guide and not a complete textbook, so that style of text should not come as a surprise to those who are diving in with little to no familiarity with both the mathematics and the actual physics. The diagrams often times will show vectors and/or are labeled strictly mathematically, so the conceptual representation is generally favored by the student with decent familiarity. The only thing I might be able to identify as a negative (for as insignificant as it may be), is that the answers to the problems are not written in with the problem itself, and instead you will have to flip to the back to find each individual answer. Nonetheless these books seem underrated and deserve more recognition.

I just finished taking the 2020 AP physics c: e&m test and I used this amazing book to study for it. It is great for reviewing a bunch of the topics and the exercises are great! Honestly, without it I don’t think I would have understood electricity and magnetism this well, I highly recommend buying it (its also only about $20 which is a great price for the amount of content contained).

I was surprised that it was in good condition.

I’ve bought all copies of these books as they are very well written indeed, by someone who really knows what they’re talking about. The author seems to have the knack of knowing just where students get stuck, and explains everything really clearly. There are also well written pages to help take your maths to the next level. These books should cost more, in my opinion, because the overall content and presentation is superb.

Short but very good explanations, worked examples and fully worked problem sets. Great for a course or review. Good price
Jesse Turner –
Great book, heaps of information and value for under $30. Well worth it.

Concepts in electricity and magnetism where generally hard for me but this book has lots of worked examples which definitely helps you get a better grasp of more challenging concepts. As a freshman in highschool this is one of the best physics workbooks that I have ever come across and helped me prepare not only for my exams but for challenging topics in the physics Olympiad.

The book simply tells you how to consider and tackle problems. First by introducing you to the concepts, then by example, and finally by practicing a few problems.
There are no trick questions and everything concept is explained. There are full solutions for every problem, every step of the mathematics is covered.
I’d recommend this to any student wanting to pursue physics at University as it will cover everything you’ll need in the 1st and most of the 2nd year for Electromagnetism.

I’ll put it like this; DR.Chris McMullen, went to the store and got groceries, came to my house *PERSONALLY*, cooked and then chopped up and FED ME THE INFORMATION. If you get any physics book that works you through equations THIS IS THE ONE OK. I’ve never understood physics like I understand after working through this book. Excellent!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

This is the preferred version.. has all the trig plus the calc
