I took this course after checking the introduction and seeing it using the Fox book on Calculus of Variations, which was my intention as well. I hoped this course will be a support to my study, but it offered more.
The lecturer go through the Fox book, but also provide his proof for the solutions. He also details many of the problems inside the book.
So this course in my belief is an excellent introduction to the topic. Stands on its own but really good support study material as well.
To better asses my review: When I attended this course I have a good grasp of first order differential equations and vector analysis. Many of the book I utilized my vector analysis knowledge. It helped me a lot, but the course establish it’s on algebra on functional analysis and I found it sufficient to follow the proofs.
