First I should explain my motivation for selecting this book since I do not teach young students. I work with teachers and other educational professionals and hands down – common core is a constant stress for most. I’ve read quite a bit about it and have certainly heard more than my share from those on the front lines of implementing it but haven’t really seen first hand what the fuss is all about. I thought this might be a nice way to understand the good and bad for myself. The book is very well done – starting with fairly basic mathematics and going through algebra, geometry, trig and even a bit of stats this touches on it all in a clear, easy to follow manner. I’d say this is an excellent resource for those who might need to get up to speed fast, need a quick refresher or simply want some individual support when tackling the tough job of teaching common core math.

As if math isn’t hard enough. If you have in a state with common core, this bulky book will help make sense of the standards. It is nicely organized and decently written. valuable to educators and parents, it explains the standards and how to explain and master them. It also serves to underscore the problems with common core, an unwieldy and unnecessary system imposed on the unwilling by bureaucrats. that being said better to understand than ignore.

I will state that I am not a teacher, educator or really anyone who should be teaching math at any level. I have always had the hardest time with mathematics throughout my whole life. Now I am trying to help my teenager, who is having a lot of the same problems that I did, learn basic algebra and it has not been going well. I’ve noticed that a lot of what and how they are teaching her is wildly different than what I learned because of the Common Core standards. I decided to get this very bulky book in hopes of helping myself so that I can help her.
This has actually been a really big help for me to get back up to speed on the concepts that my child is learning. It is broken down in to segmented chapters that help me not only understand what she is being taught, but also help her make sense of the information she is taking in. I cannot speak for the educator side, but as a parent looking to figure out how to help your child it has been very useful.

THE COMMON CORE MATHEMATICS COMPANION:THE STANDARDS DECODED, HIGH SCHOOL: WHAT THEY SAY, WHAT THEY MEAN, HOW TO TEACH THEM (Corwin Mathematics Series) is a truly excellent high school math teacher’s tool. Although I’m not a teacher (and my algebra is rusty), this book makes me feel that I could teach high school math if no qualified teachers were available after some truly major disaster.

The subtitle of the book says it all. For each standard, the standard is stated, and then the standard is explained in terms of what the students are expected to master, and why. This is followed by instructions on what the teacher does in class, and what the students do in class. Then another short section talks about addressing student misconceptions and common errors.

It seems to me that this book could be very useful to a parent who is helping a child with high school math homework. The clear explanation of each standard makes it possible to determine what the child’s actual homework assignments are supposed to be teaching, and what the child needs to learn.

Exactly what I needed when looking for a way to connect not only 8th grade standards from the companion book but to allow extension of the pre-ap course for Algebra 1 and beyond.

Not worth all four but relatively good

Excellent resource for teachers and parents.

As a parent of a certain generation, I’ve found it nearly impossible to understand Common Core (which replaced the “New Math” that confused our own parents. It’s always something…) This book has been a great resource as we try to help our middle-school son navigate the new standards, and more importantly, the new high-stakes testing.

This binder is a wonderful resource for anyone teaching Common Core math at the high school level. It has conceptual overviews and how to make direct connections. It goes on with what the teachers do and what is then expected of the students. There are suggested material for each of the standards. This book basically lays out everything concisely and clearly so teachers can plan their lessons.

The book has parts that cover Modeling, Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. It doesn’t directly go over trigonometry or calculus. The Resources section has a table of standards and some reproducibles. There is also a list of online tools and some books that are of value. It’s been quite some time since I taught this, but I’m glad to have this companion to ease me into it.

The Common Core Mathematics Companion is an essential tool for standards-based mathematics instruction. Teachers are provided with valuable guidance for teaching as well as student learning behaviors for each standard.

I’m a HS Math DH, and I love the way this book breaks down the standards.

  13. Tisha H Stoutenburg

This is an extremely comprehensive guide of high school math standards including key ideas of what the student should be learning and pitfalls that they might encounter.

As an administrator, I use these books with teachers as a support to deeply understand Common Core Standards. This is about the 10th one I have purchased!
